How are we to critically explain the current resurgence of interest in community custody? The sanction has recently assumed more importance as a consequence of six developments: (I) increased interest in restorative justice around the world; (ii) the growth of reintegrative shaming as a way of addressing offending; (iii) the pressure to contain or reduce rising prison populations; (iv) the rapid evolution of electronic surveillance technologies; (v) increased interest in what might be termed multidimensional sanctions that simultaneously promote multiple sentencing goals, and (vi) a growing public acceptance of community based sanctions.

Critical thinking and persuasion of argument is employed, where a claim/ argument is stated and explanation provided as to why it is controversial. Clear and accurate reasons are provided in support of the claim/argument. Discussion of reasons against the claim/argument; explanation of why argument remains valid. Writing has a compelling opening, an informative middle, and a satisfying conclusion. Personal engagement with the material shows that the writer cares about the argument. It clearly and logically incorporates material from the textbook where appropriate.
