Critical discussion on the roles and responsibilities of the newly qualified
nurse
Approx 20% of total word count 500-600 words
Students should give an overview of the many different roles/responsibilities of the
newly qualified nurse. This should not be pure description/lists. Differing viewpoints
on some of these roles should be evident with relevant references.
Reasons for role choices
Approx 5 % of total word count 125-200 words
Clear reasons should be given for the chosen two roles/responsibilities to focus on in
further depth e.g are they considered priority roles? Are they areas the student has a
particular interest in? Are they roles the student has struggled with and are keen to
develop or areas of strength that they wish to further improve in. Maybe they are
roles that are explored continually in the literature and so hold a lot of interest for
nurses or the public or are roles that are becoming increasingly important in the
context of for example the economic climate, impending changes to structures in the
NHS etc. Students canat state that they were instructed to write about PGDas as a
choice of role; we would expect a more valid rationale than this. For this one they
could discuss why it is a topic that the NMC considers important for newly qualified
nurses to know about/ how will it assist them in your career. The student should
draw on relevant policies that perhaps necessitate the need for PGDs to be used.
The student needs to validate their role/responsibility choices with relevant
references.
Critical discussion on chosen role/responsibility and that of PGDs (30% Each
marks 60%)
Approx 65% of word count approx 1600-1800 words
Students should provide an explanation/definition of what the role means. So for
example if the student chose accountability then a referenced definition, explaining
how it differs from responsibility should be given. For PGDs expect a definition of
what they are and what they entail. This should be relatively brief as the majority of
the word count should be for the critical discussion that follows.
Relevant legal, professional and ethical, moral considerations when discussing the
chosen roles/responsibilities should be evident. Balanced view points should be
provided with relevant references.
