i · Increase student ability to articulate critical thinking and clinical judgment skills during the clinical experience in the written format.
i · To provide students with an opportunity to research current literature regarding nurses role in critical thinking and clinical judgment.
i · Improve student ability to analyze, critique, and evaluate reliable resources.
i · Increase student computer, writing, and communication skills.
GUIDELINES:
Utilize the following nursing critical thinking and clinical judgment skills: (Alfaro-Lefevre, R., 2009)
i · Identify assumptions
i · Assess systematically and comprehensively
i · Checking accuracy and reliability (validating data)
i · Distinguishing between normal and abnormal, and identifying signs and symptoms
i · Making inferences and drawing conclusions
i · Clustering related clues (data)
i · Distinguish relevant from irrelevant data
i · Recognize inconsistencies in data, and missing data
i · Identify patterns in data
i · Promoting health by identifying and managing risk factors
i · Building an appropriate plan of care utilizing the nursing process

1. Write a 4-6 page paper (length does not include title page or reference page) which includes the following elements:
i · Introduction:
o Introduction about the relevance of the nurseas ability to utilize critical thinking and clinical judgment skills in nursing practice.
i · Body:
o Subheadings of each of the critical thinking and clinical judgment skills as mentioned above including:
i § Definition of each of the critical thinking and clinical judgment skills in your own words.
i § An actual example from clinical experience in which critical thinking and clinical judgment skills were utilized
i § An explanation of why this situation caused the student to utilize critical thinking and clinical judgment skills.
i · Conclusion:
o Discussion of how the critical thinking and clinical judgment skills relate to nursing practice in general, and specifically to you in your nursing practice.
o Evaluate how the use of critical thinking and clinical judgment improved your patient outcomes.
2. You must use correct APA writing format. Resources that explain how to correctly format a paper and cite references can be accessed through the CSCC library or internet. For additional writing assistance, you may contact the CSCCas Success Center.
3. Paper must include citations and references of at least one credible internet source, at least one professional nursing journal (peer-reviewed), and at least one nursing text book. A total of three sources must be used, cited and referenced appropriately.
4. To obtain full credit, you must address all areas as outlined above and meet the criteria as defined within the Writing Rubric 276 sheet.
5. You must submit the paper by the due date and time (early submissions also accepted). Paper must be saved as a RTF file before placing in drop box. One percentage point (1.0% point) will be deducted from the final grade for each day or portion of a day that it is tardy.
GRADING:
Completion of this NUR 2276 Written Assignment is a Requirement for the successful completion of this course.The total points achieved for each category will be listed on the attached writing rubric for which an overall score will then be calculated. See the writing rubric for further details.
