ASSIGNMENT MARKING CRITERIA

1. PRESENTATION 10%

i) Layout, Word Count, Page Numbering, Type set, Spacing,

the presentation is fine

ii) Referencing, Quotations, Bibliography,

There are problems here throughout the essay there are problems with how you use references and quotations. Many authors appear in the biblio who are not cirted in the work e.g cuppitt. You reference a web site early on that has no academic merit.

iii) Sentence construction, Paragraphs, Writing style, Spelling, Punctuation

This essay oscillates between Phd standard sentences to sentences that are poorly crafted and written.

2. SELECTION OF MATERIAL 10%

i) Extent and use of sources

A very diverse range of authors and books are cited in this essay

ii) Acknowledgement of sources

It seems to me that not all sources are acknowledgedsee Dominelli for example

3. PLANNING & STRUCTURE 10%

i) Introduction, appropriate progression of themes, conclusion

There is an ok ish introduction, but then there is little sense of direction or travel to the work. The focus changes very frequently and inexplicably from one topic to anotherthere is little sense of how one issues leads to another

4. CONTENT
i) Knowledge and Understanding 15%

This is a confusing and very frustrating essay to mark. Individaul sentences are at times ok, but they neither build on previous sentences nor lead into subsequent sentencesas a result whilst some of the parts (sentences) are finethe whole is very muddled and confusing. This calls into question just how much you understood of those individual sentences that are ok.

Too much of the essay is polemticthat is, too much of it is made up of quite radical (which is refreshing) but unsubstantiated personal assertions. An academic essay must make a series of points that develop a coherent argument. Your essay is a series of individual arguments that seem not to make a coherent pointsometimes you are championing a radical approach to practice, next you are extolling the virtues of task centered practice? Its not possible to work out where you stand on issues and what it is youre trying to say about contemporary social work practice and what has infleunced it..

There are small individual sections on case management, neo-liberalism and post modernity which make some sense-but assertions are made which question the extent of your understanding.

ii) contextualising of knowledge in appropriate anti-oppressive/discriminatory 15% framework

There are some nuggests of awareness of how the individualising tendency of the post modern turn threatens the ADP movementbut comments like what s wrong with service users calls into question your ADP credentials

iii) Application to Practice 15%

There is some rather simplistic focus on TCP and psychodynamic casework, better is the polemic about caseworking (but because its polemic it lacks depth)

iv) Consideration of knowledge in broader ethical and socio-political contexts 10%

this is not goodthere are, as I ve stated, some better references to post modern ideas and neo-liberlaism but your engagement with these terms are not consistent or lacking contradiction

v) Ability to critically analyse knowledge and competing evidence 15%

Some fairly bold statements are made in an uncritical fashionthis is a shame because at times you offer a very critical eye. When you are critical, the statements you make are (i think ) valid but lacking context and consistency (or references) your critique comes over as polemic

A little muddled together but ok as an intro

According to (Stream, 1971), social casework was developed when the nation turned away from reform. Strange. It would have made sense to follow your plan and begin with the post mdoern turn to give you work some context Social casework represented a part of social work which focussed more on the individual with its influence begining to increase shortly before the 19th century (Payne, 2000). Social work and social casework is described by (Webb,2001) as having gained prestige with working with casualties from war related issues. Back in the 1800s,poor expression a grant was set up by the Charity Organisation Society with funds to help poor families. The work of the committees was done by volunteers who offered practical and financial assistance to families. This was called social case work, nothe grant was not called that however a need was identified that there needed poorto be training for case workers for them to work professionally. This became the founding principle of modern day social work (uk/section.aspx?id1155). Sumamrising the contents of a web page does not amount to acadmeic writing Because the service offered by t
