Hello Class,

My name is Tammy Walton and I currently am employed with the Veterans Hospital as a Clinical Nurse Educator. I am new to the position and am excited about this challenging opportunity. My background is eight years critical care nurse, clinical adjunct instructor for BSN nursing students and currently with Kaplan teaching RN nursing students. I love what I do and felt once I took the courage to step outside my comfort zone and take this job, everything has fallen in place. I am married and we currently are empty nesters. My son is deployed in Afghanistan and will be coming back home the end of June, so it will be an exciting time. My role with the VA is passionate for the best quality care to be given to these veterans. My role as a public policy change agent will be building up new nurse orientation, preceptor and residency programs, which will also include the certified nurse aide orientation program. The policies written need to be updated and flow with todays evidence based practice. I dont have a lot of experience with public policy, health reform and health care financing. I am looking forward to learning more about how the laws (which I learned from my last class) will play apart with the policy and politics. The policies are guidelines for accepted practice(Grant, Ballard 2011)

Discussion 2

Hello Professor and Class,

My name is Barbara Lassiter, please feel free to call me Barb. Prior to my current position at the University of Maryland Medical System as Risk Management/Loss Prevention Education Manger, and a per diem Certified Legal Nurse Consultant, I worked for a Federally Qualified Health Center in Baltimore, Maryland and was always enforcing the regulatory guidelines of the Centers for Medicare Services. It is CMS that serves as a liaison and primary resource for the U.S. Congress explaining policies, payment systems, and operations of the Medicare, Medicaid, and Childrenas Health Insurance Program (CHIP). The Office of Legislation of CMS answers to inquiries from Members of Congress and Congressional Committees which authorize policy change (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, 2013). By working in tandem with CMS, Federally Qualified Health Centers which are paid by federal dollars are often on the front lines of change and enforcement as seen in my previous role. In being a nurse pursuing a graduate degree, I feel that all of the curriculum that Kaplan has afforded me will give me the opportunity to act as a public policy change agent. Through such courses as Evidence a Based Practice, Nursing Ethics and Law as well as this course will give me the foundation to do so effectively. Although I have not worked directly with legislative bodies in Maryland, I do believe that nurses are on the front lines to create policy change. It is the nurse who is one of the first persons to see a need for change, performs literature review and creates Evidence-Based Practice mechanisms that are valid and promote quality as well as cost savings and then implements processes and forwards positive outcomes to upper management for suggestion to policy leaders (Abood, 2007). With the implementation of Health Care Reform in 2014, nursing professionals will be instrumental to make this legislation as positive as it can be despite the hills and valleys that are destined to lie ahead (Staff of the Washington Post, 2010).
