From a social psychological perspective, what is stereotyping and how does it operate? Describe the basic consequences of stereotypes for perceivers judgments of others. Then, consider the extent to which it is possible for perceivers to control stereotyping. Based on your review of relevant research, do you believe it is possible for people to control or stop the influence of stereotyping on their judgments? Do you believe it is possible for perceivers to control the consequences of stereotyped judgment (that is, overt behaviors toward the target)? In discussing these two questions, be sure to explain how perceivers may exert control or prevent stereotyping in different ways considering processing at both the automatic and the controlled stages. Also be sure to specify the conditions under which people can and can t exert control over stereotyping, and to explain why those conditions make a difference.
