Assessment

After making a collective decision on how to approach your group s theme for the exhibition you should individually select one or more works from the Hatton collection which you will display and interpret. The objects, display and interpretation should be coherent with the aims, theme and style of the exhibition and should meet conservation standards. This means that although your display will be assessed individually it will be in part a result of a co-ordinated overall group effort. You will also receive a base mark relating to the quality of the exhibition as a whole. All members of the group will receive the same base mark, which will form 20% of the assessment for the module.

Part one: display and interpretation

Your group exhibition (base mark of 20%) will be assessed as to the following interlinked aspects:

” Coherence of the aims
” Successful and creative development of themes
” Quality of selection
” General interpretation
” Cultural and intellectual accessibility
” Coherence and quality of post-opening activities

Your individual display (worth 20%) will be assessed as to:
” Its coherence with the exhibition
” Its contribution to the exhibition
” Its physical and intellectual accessibility
” Its appearance
” Object safety
” Visitor safety
” How well it captures attention and provokes interest

You should also write a commentary (worth 20%) on your display, detailing, in no more than 1000 words:

” Reasons for your selection of object(s)
” Rationale for the interpretive strategy (including spatial arrangement), style, content and graphics
” Awareness of alternative approaches to art historical interpretation and justification of approach adopted
” Awareness of conservation and Health and Safety standards

Part two: the exhibition as a process and as a product (40%)

You will write a report on the process of developing the exhibition and its success as a product. You should:

” Identify and discuss strengths and weaknesses, constraints, setbacks and missed opportunities
” Explain and justify your roles and responsibilities within the team (excluding an account of display developed for part one of this assignment)
” Evaluate the success of your contribution to the team
” Evaluate the success of the group work generally and of the exhibition as a finished product

Please note that you will be DIRECTLY responsible for the planning, organisation, staffing and success of the exhibition project AS A GROUP. This means that you must devise a team structure, allocating roles and responsibilities within the group and establishing the balance between individual work and the overall group effort.
