Week 2 Contexts
CONTEXTS: IDEOLOGIES, HEGEMONY & CULTURAL PLACEMENTi??
Students will also be introduced to art museums as state mandated cultural institutions. Concepts to be considered include egalitarian and democratic intentions and the museum as a tool of nationalism and propaganda. We consider how museums regularly remove objects from their functional and often geographical cultural context and via the mechanics of collection and display construct new contexts for these objects.
Part of the challenge is to make sense of this mutation and the range of factors that shape the character of these new contexts. The topic introduces the notion of the i??artworldi?? as the lens for interpreting meaning within the sphere of the art museum. i??
