CASE STUDY
Steve has been promoted to a supervisor post at The Oaks Residential home. He has been asked to talk to Mary who is a resident at the home; she has suddenly become withdrawn when previously, when previously, she was a very active and sociable member of the residential group. Steve has been asked to find out if anything is bothering Mary as she has also shown a drastic reduction in her appetite.
1. Draw up a plan for preparing a room to have the conversation with the service user in, explaining the actions taken.
2. Prepare an outline plan for the conversation, including an outline transcript of the initial contact, main content and winding up.
3. Draw up a check list of the skills you will use during the interaction, ensuring it can be used for assessment purposes
4. Role-play the one to one interaction with the service user and record the discussion for verification by your tutor
5. Evaluate in-depth your own performance, making realistic recommendations for improvement

CASE STUDY: PREPARING NEW WORKERS
A group of new workers who will be working in a variety of care settings are having a combines training day.
The purpose of the training day is to raise their knowledge and awareness of the different types of communications used in health, social care and early yearas setting. They also need to have knowledge of factors that can support and inhibit communication.
You have been asked to produce a resource pack for the training event which will provide the information required during the training.
You should give as many example as possible to illustrate the point being made.
The resource pack could take the form of a written report or couls contain a mixture of reports, hand outs or leaflets.
1. Give an in depth account of the different types of communication used in care settings and their purpose. Remember to include different types of examples to include: oral, written, computerised and special methods.
2. Explain in details how the effectiveness of interactions can be increased and the level of personal value and support can be improved. Give examples to illustrate the point made.
3. Explain how communication can be inhibited by inappropriate factors, giving examples to illustrate the point made.

CASE STUDY: The oaks

Steve is a care assistant at The Oaks Day Care Center. Each day between 40 and 50older adults attend the day centre; their ages tend to be over 65 years of age. Most attend because ,they lack social interaction as they live alone and most of them have health and mobility problems which could cause them to become isolated.

1. Give background information about the case study
2. Give a detailed and comprehensive explanation of four communication skills used by the care workers or service users in the setting. Include a detailed discussion of the reasons of using each skill.
3. Discuss how the care values are applied and appropriate use of communication skills to show how service users are values in the setting.

The manager of the setting has asked you to undertake research using a variety of appropriate sources, e.g. internet, books, prior research to provide a comprehensive analysis showing how two theories could provide care workers with guidance about the effect of communication on the service users and care workers.

3. Present the results of your research as guidance for the care workers.
