St Century Children Using or Abused By ICT.

Subject: ICT & Society

Assignment:

You are required to write an individual essay covering an aspect of ICT and society with Ethics, based on the following real life Issue.

21st Century Children, Using or Abused by ICT?

Young Children are becoming an increasingly significant consumer group for advanced computing and communications services. In some cases children as young as four or five are using and spending a lot of their time occupied with ICT products and services. Life in front of a screen and keyboard (specifically, e-Learning and entertainment applications) consumes a large portion of the average child s day. An estimated 65 million children between the ages of 2 and 17 have access to the Internet at home in Europe and the US, and a rapidly growing proportion of young people and children have personal mobile telephones. However, children are generally overlooked when considering ICT accessibility requirements; they are expected to use

Equipment designed for adults. Products often take the form of, or are disguised as, toys, but far too often they are designed for the generic user, i.e. the able-bodied adult. This may result in a number of problems for children such as:

(Key Points to discuss in Essay)

” an inability to access services

” service abuse

” on-line vulnerability to exploitation Child Abuse

” failures in growth of relevant cognitive skills and

” physical harm from prolonged use of systems with inappropriate or inadequate

physical terminal design.

These problems may be exacerbated by the fact that electronic media are extending their influence throughout children s lives, affecting not just their leisure but also their education, their future employment prospects, and even their ability to interact with family and friends

Accessibility of products and services should thus be both a design objective and also a matter of childrens rights. The right to protection from harmful influences, abuse and exploitation, and the right to participate fully in family, cultural and social life, as specified in the UN Convention on the Rights of the child , are directly applicable to ICT accessibility Issues.
