GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT TO MEET LEARNING NEEDS

PC5 Supporting Learners Words: 2500

Submission date: 27 February 2009
Resubmission date: 5 June 2009

Background
The monitoring, tracking and recording of individual learners progress is essential. Support systems for students, including tutoring, are a crucial part of the learning process and the successful support of individual learners and retention, achievement and progression are core concerns of further education institutions.

As a teacher in the lifelong learning sector, you will be responsible for ensuring that your students are receiving the support they need in order to be successful with their studies. Sometimes this may mean conducting diagnostic assessment when a learner arrives or making use of diagnostic assessment provided to you. You will also devise ways of making an initial assessment of learners needs when you meet them.

Sometimes support may mean adjusting your teaching or providing additional or alternative resources. Sometimes it will be working with specialist departments in the college in order to provide specialised support in class or out of class time.

In addition to subject teaching, most lecturers in the lifelong learning sector will also be responsible for a group of students as a personal tutor . Tasks involved in this role are many and varied, depending on the learners age, level and course of study, but could involve:

 inducting students into college facilities and policies
 providing, or directing learners to financial, academic and personal information and support
 providing study skills
 referring students for Key Skills support
 liaising with college colleagues or outside agencies
 encouraging participation in extra curricular (or enrichment) activities
 supporting progression activities e.g. to HE, further courses or employment

Purpose
Although you may not have your own tutorial group on teaching practice, this assignment is designed to prepare you for this future role by encouraging research into and critique of support practices in your placement college.

The assignment is also designed to encourage you to evaluate the support you have been giving learners in your classes, by requiring you to write case studies of two learners who you have supported.

N.B. This assignment should be started early in order to give you time to gather information, talk to learners and staff, put strategies into practice and evaluate them. In your assignment, learners confidentiality should be respected by referring to them as Learner A and Learner B or by using initials

What is required
This assignment is in two sections Parts A and B.

Part A

Choose one group of learners you have taught. Observe them in their tutorials with their personal tutor, talk to colleagues and then write a report in which you:

 profile the learners in the group

 outline the personal tutorial arrangements for this group

 critically review and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of institutional policies and guidance provision for the group

(1000 words)

Part B

From your practice and the learners you have supported, identify two students with particular learning needs. If possible at least one of these learners should have a previously identified barrier to learning. Write case studies of each learner to show how you have supported their learning needs and reviewed their progress.

For each learner you should explain:

 how the learner s needs were identified

 what their needs were

 in what ways the learner s needs created a barrier to learning

 how you have supported those needs

 how you have used differentiated approaches

 how you have reviewed progress

(Approx 750 words for each learner.)

Parts A and B:

Your group profile should include relevant characteristics such as, among other things, gender mix, age range, cultural and educational background, previous experience, reasons for attending, motivation, willingness to participate, language competence, learning needs and preferences.

Institutional guidance and support systems might include, among other things, counselling and advice, Key Skills support, peer support arrangements, enrichment, additional learning support and careers/progression guidance.

The two learners selected should have different needs, e.g. one could be dyslexic and the other might be suffering from very low self esteem and confidence.
