Contemporary America provides unique opportunities and challenges for differing ethnic groups. As you define your own ethnicity, what are those opportunities and challenges? Do historical and contemporary issues of passing, blood-quantum standards, or other key concepts from this weeks reading impact your understanding of your ethnicity? Itas just male and female a right? Using sex/gender as a dichotomous discrete variable has long been a teaching methods in most statistics courses. Itas pretty simple a either you or you arenat female/male. We are not kind of female or kind of male. Right? Well that is now an interesting question. The line between male and female may not be as clear cut as once thought. Recently, Caster Semenya, the world champion runner from South Africa, had her gender questioned. This brought into the forefront a discussion that maybe sex is not clearly a matter of an XX or an XY chromosome (see reading 10).

As you reflect on this a?enlighteninga? discovery, how should we decide the sex/gender of a person? If the gender is in question, who should decide? When should this decision be made? How does the concept of a new category of sex/gender affect contemporary Americans? Is there a way to resolve this issue? What makes us male and female?

With time and age, children know what their gender is, regardless of any and all child-rearing to the contrary. We can observe how they act and function even before they tell us, thus intersex children should not have a?gender labelsa? until they decide their gender!

a?Whereas some people seem to see prejudice and discrimination everywhere, others are certain that prejudice and discrimination no longer exist. As difficult as it is, try to evaluate each situation with an open mind. Although prejudice and discrimination often go hand in hand, they do not have to. Four combinations may occur in a variety of situations (Robert Merton, 1976)

The prejudiced discriminator. This is someone who holds personal prejudices and discriminates. Example: A manageras age-related prejudices influence her decisions in a variety of personnel actions. The manager evaluates a younger worker more favorably than she does an older person who performs just as well.

The prejudiced nondiscriminator. In this case, a personas prejudicial attitudes do not lead to discriminatory behavior. Example: A male employee feels prejudice toward his female supervisor because of her gender but does not show it for fear of the consequences.

The unprejudiced discriminator. Someone who is not prejudiced discriminates nonetheless. There are times when a person may discriminate unknowingly by following certain commonly accepted policies or practices. In addition, someone may belong to a group and discriminate to conform to group expectations. Example: Even though a person is openminded about the subject of homosexuality, he caves in to group pressure at school and discriminates against certain people who a?act gay.a?

The unprejudiced nondiscriminator. This person is not prejudiced and does not discriminate. Example: An employer conducting a job interview notices that an interviewee with a noticeable accent shies away from direct eye contact. As in every other interview, the employer puts the candidate at ease and focuses solely on the personas ability to do the job. It is important to remember that each of these combinations applies to the thinking and behaviors of people in situations, not to the individuals themselves.a? (Bucher, 2010, pp. 100 101)

A disability is a state which considerably impairs individual or individuals as relative to a societal standard. Significantly means impairment of daily living activities included to but not limited to: work, self-care, social relationships, etc. The term, disability, refers to an individual functioning, including physical impairment, sensory impairment, cognitive impairment, intellectual impairment mental illness, and various types of chronic disease.

Discrimination refers to behavior making distinction in for or against, a person based on the group, class, or category to which that person belongs rather than on individual merit. This involves formally or informally assigning people into groups which leads to typically unequal, treatments, rights and obligations. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Prohibits discrimination if a person is perceived as being limited by a disability, regardless of whether that person is actually limited by a disabilitya? (Bell, 2012, 479).

a?Appearancisma? or a?Lookisma? is the concept that individuals are discriminated on by their appearance. Typically this prejudice or discrimination based on is physical appearance and especially physical appearance believed to fall short of societal notions of beauty.
