GUIDE TO CRITICAL RESPONSE PAPERS

Objectives
Critical response papers are designed to enhance your critical thinking and writing skills, as well as your understanding of some of the important historical moments and events in modern Korean history. You are required to write one critical response paper from the part: Koreas Openingin 1876 to the end of Japanese colonial rule in 1945

Requirements
The papers should be about 3 pages long (about 600-800 words), and be a coherent essay that incorporates ALL the assigned readings of the week that you choose. Do NOT just summarize, but instead demonstrate how you understood the assigned readings by engaging with the main arguments, and by discussing issues/themes that you found interesting or problematic (also refer to the Evaluation section below). The papers should be submitted via TurnItIn.com. Please note that TurnItIn will not accept late submission. Each paper is worth 15% of final grade.

Grading Guidelines

Critical response papers will be graded on a 30-point grading scale, based on the following three categories.

1) Big Picture (10 points)
: How you demonstrate that you fully understand the main arguments of the assigned readings, how they are related to one another, and how they fit into the larger picture of Korean history.

2) Depth of Discussion (10 points)
: How you engage with some of the main themes and issues that you found interesting and/or problematic in the readings; you can share your comments and critiques, or raise issues or questions

3) Sources, Organization, and Writing Style (10 points)
: The papers should incorporate all readings, be well organized, and be free of spelling and grammar errors. When you cite the readings, indicate it by the last name of the author and the page number in parenthesis. For example, –(Kim, 45).

I will attach the 4 pdf files which you need to use all of them to edit my response paper and sample essay. However, do not copy it. The professor send me the sample essay to get good grade. Do not summarize, but demonstrate that you did the assigned readings by engaging with the main argument, and issues/themes that you found interesting or problematic.

Later, I will submit the papers via TurnItIn.com which checks plagiarism and copy from website. Be careful about them!

The professor commented after reading the paper.
Professor says,
Here are my suggestions to improve your paper
1) Try to have an introduction that states the focus/direction of your paper, and conclusion
2) Do all the assigned readings, and discuss your own analysis of the readings rather than give summary of them
3) Tie the readings to show how they help us understand the time period that you choose to write

This papers are part of 15 percentage of the grade. ItS very important. Please write well. Thank you so much:). The professor commented the essay, you need to focus on it when you edit the paper.
