Project Overview

This project is a Cultural Identity Interview and Analysis. For this project, you will conduct an interview with someone who has a culture distinct from yours and write a paper about his or her experiences. Interview subjects could include, but are not limited to:

· An immigrant to your home country
· A person of a different race or ethnicity
· A person who belongs to a subgroup you do not belong to

(Please let me know as soon as possible the race/ culture of your interviewee)

For this project, you will write a 1500 word paper in APA format that includes the following elements:

1. A description of the rules, norms, traditions, and values of that person s culture or subgroup, based on the following questions:

1.What is your race or ethnicity?
2. What languages does your race/ethnicity speak in your home country? Do you speak English all the time while in the U.S.?
3. What languages can you read and write?
4. What is the region make-up that your race/ethnicity normally lives?
5. What are the favorite foods of your culture? Are these your favorite foods?
6. What is the normal family make-up of your ethnicity in your home region? Is the family make-up different for your ethnicity here in the U.S.?
7. Are there obvious non-verbal messages that your ethnicity uses? Have your non-verbal messages been misunderstood by someone of a different race/ethnicity?
8. What is the normal clothing that your ethnicity wears? If different than what is worn in the U.S. do you ever wear it while in the U.S.? What is the reaction from people here?
9. What are a few of the cultural norms of your ethnicity?
10. Are you or have you been the victim of a culturally derogatory experience?

These follow up questions will be asked:

How do assumptions about cultural  norms impact your behavior on a day-to-day basis?
Do you recognize any challenges or disadvantages related to your culture being outside the  norm ? How do you respond to those challenges?
Do you recognize any privileges or advantages associated with assimilating to the  normative culture? How do you react to that recognition?
What do you cite as your sources of strength or support?

2. Answers to the following questions:
a. How do assumptions about cultural  norms impact your interviewee s behavior on a day-to-day basis?
b. Does your interviewee recognize any challenges or disadvantages related to her/his culture being outside the  norm ? How does he/she respond to those challenges?
c. Does your interviewee recognize any privileges or advantages associated with assimilating to the  normative culture? How does he/she react to that recognition?
d. What does that person cite as being sources of strength or support?
3. An analysis of the theories presented in the course related to your interviewee s experience.
4. A summary of how your interviewee s experiences affect you and your communication with people of other cultures.
