Writing Exercise: Making Characters More Believable:
This exercise has a few steps. The first step involves writing a scene in which a character is introduced and thrown into a conflict. The second step is to go deeper into your character and make him/her more believable, using a character development worksheet.
Visit a place where people wait -a bus or train station, an airport, etc. -and watch people for a while. Choose a person who seems unique. Or you may listen to a radio call-in show and choose one caller whose voice suggests an unusual character. Once youve chosen someone, write a brief scene in which something happens to this character. Be sure to start in medias res, putting your character in some sort of conflict. Try to Dancebetween action and defining character.
